I also used to have a PS3-lookalike knockoff controller which Atari800MacX also saw and used happily. Atari800MacX sees it and happily uses it without any third-party software. In my case, I have a cheap Chinese knockoff of an NES controller with a USB connector to it.

I'm assuming you have a USB game pad since you said you're using Game Pad Companion (which, incidentally, is a terrible bit of software mainly because it hasn't been updated in years) in which case I assume you want (for example) JOYSTICK 1 to be your game pad and JOYSTICK 2 to be LEFT KEYBOARD or NUMERIC KEYPAD.

Options for GAMEPAD 1 (2, 3, or 4) are unavailable (grayed out). However, also in the CONTROLLERS tab you can set JOYSTICK 1 (2, 3, or 4) to various modes, but the only mode available is LEFT KEYBOARD. Under CONTROLLERS you can define keyboard joysticks using LEFT KEYBOARD or NUMERIC KEYPAD, and through those respective buttons you can freely edit the keys assigned to each definition. In the PREFERENCES window there are tabs for CONTROLLERS and GAMEPADS. I can assign the buttons, pad and joystick to any key on my Mac, but can only seem to assign movement to the Left Keyboard Option in the Controller tab in the 800’s Preferences.
